• What are Haemorrhoids?

  • Haemorrhoids are vessels located between the intestine and the anal canal, which swell during the closure of the anus. Everyone needs these vessels to close the anus hermetically. It is only when these vessels enlarge that we speak of Haemorrhoids, which can cause problems.

• What are the symptoms of Haemorrhoids?

  • There is often painless, clear red bleeding of varying intensity during bowel movements, but it can also be sensitive to pressure, itching, or the perception during bowel movements that something is coming out of the anus, retracting, or having to be pushed back, and in advanced stages, permanent nodes at the edge of the anus.

• What causes haemorrhoids?

  • Prolonged pressure, sitting on the toilet for long periods, constipation, but also very fine and misshapen stools, overweight (adiposity), pregnancy, hereditary defect.

• What can be done about Haemorrhoids?

  • First of all, a proctological examination must be carried out to determine whether the symptoms are caused by haemorrhoids or other causes.
    
    If the haemorrhoids are slightly enlarged, they can be treated by natural stool regulation with dietary fibre and simple measures such as sclerotherapy or ligation with small rubber bands. These procedures are not painful and have very few complications, but often have to be repeated several times.
    
    Various surgical procedures are used for severely enlarged haemorrhoids: individual enlarged haemorrhoidal nodes can be excised or pulled upwards using gathering sutures; in the case of circularly enlarged haemorrhoids, part of the enlarged haemorrhoidal tissue is usually removed intra-anal or pulled upwards.
